The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has released its annual report for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, where it provides a detailed view on the various programs and initiatives the CMF undertook in the past year to support Canada’s audiovisual industry. In the last fiscal year, CMF funding triggered $1.5B in production activity across the country. Every $1 of CMF funding generated $4.29 in production activity, slightly higher than last year’s $4.12, despite historic challenges as a result of the global pandemic.
Thanks to the $100.4M in Government of Canada COVID-19 Emergency Relief Funds administered by the CMF, businesses in the audiovisual industry were able to maintain operations, ensuring a quick return to production.
Informed by consultations with industry members and producers from sovereignty- and equity-seeking communities, the CMF disbursed $9M through two different initiatives supporting racialized creators.
In the last fiscal year, the CMF funded 1,309 projects; distributed $100.4 million in emergency funds to over 1,200 companies and organizations; celebrated 219 awards won by CMF funded projects and funded 30 productions that saw over 1 million views each.
