Shortly before its world premiere, HBO Europe has acquired the rights to the true crime series “The Miramar Murders: The State vs Pablo Ibar” for HBO España and HBO Portugal. The miniseries, directed by Olmo Figueredo and produced by La Claqueta PC, La Cruda Realidad and Irusoin, premiered on September 24 at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
“The Miramar Murders: The State vs Pablo Ibar” gives a highly detailed account of the 25-year long court case that led the Spaniard Pablo Ibar to be put on death row, after being convicted of triple homicide in Miramar, Florida. The murders were the first in US history to have been fully recorded on a home security camera, making the case one of the most talked about in Florida's history. Pablo Ibar's case was reopened in 2016, after Florida's Supreme Court ruled that there was a lack of evidence against him, as well as a lack of due process.
The show has had privileged access to Pablo Ibar's legal team and has followed the evolution of the trial from the points of view of everyone involved: victims, relatives, lawyers, state prosecutors, witnesses, judges, police officers and, of course, the accused: Pablo Ibar. Over more than six years of filming, interviews have been carried out with over 50 people and the documentary's crew have been the only cameras allowed inside the courtroom throughout the whole process.
The series, which is made up of 6x55’ episodes, is “quite possibly the best true crime series to ever have been made in Spain,” said Iván Diaz, Head of International Sales at Filmax. “The case has been all over the papers here for years and we're delighted that it's going to be released in Spain and Portugal by HBO Europe, one of the most prestigious names in global television. This is a really great series, on a par with some of the best true crime series ever made, and we're sure that it will travel extremely well outside Spain as well. At the end of the day, it's also an American story, a Latin story and a show with many layers,” he added.
Ragnhild Thorbech, SVP Aquisitions & Programming at HBO Europe, added: “The story of Pablo Ibar and his long-lasting fight for justice is really captivating, and we are very happy to offer ‘The Miramar Murders: The State vs Pablo Ibar’ exclusively to our subscribers in Spain and Portugal”.
