Globo promoted the panel “Globo Series Screening: 2020” at MIPCOM with the presence of top players in the international market, press and guests, Globo presented what is new on series for the international catalog and shared details about the current movements of the company regarding multiplatform content creation, production and distribution.

“We want to show our productive capacity in short formats. Globo, as well as the entertainment industry in the world, is on the move. We have shown here, today, some of the productions that constitute our pipeline with more than 40 new series,” said Junior Volpato, Market Manager at Globo.

The executive highlighted Globo wide production: every year, more than six thousand hours of entertainment programming are produced including telenovelas, series, limited series, talk shows and reality shows. This robust production of several genres and formats shows the creative potential of Globo Studios in Rio de Janeiro which, recently, have gained even more productive capacity with the opening of MG4, three new studios that, integrated to the production facilities, result in a total area of 1,73 million m². With these new studios, Globo consolidates as the most important content producer of Latin America and enables it to create productions increasingly more ambitious for diverse windows and ready for diverse partnerships.

Illustrating this movement from Globo, the panel highlight was ‘Aruanas’, an original Globoplay series created due to a partnership between Globo and Maria Farinha Filmes, which last July started a new distribution model unprecedented so far, made available for more than 150 countries through the digital platform and that is now also available for licensing in the market. The series was very well received internationally and had premiere events in Lisbon, London and New York where it received praise for the choice of the theme and social relevance.

Freely inspired by true events, ‘Aruanas’ shows the individual and collective strength of four brave and inspiring activists who has the courage to act for what they believe. The series has counted with the technical partnership of Greenpeace and the support of some of the top human rights and environmental organizations in the world, such as UN Environment, WWF Brazil and Amnesty International.

With 10 episodes, the series deals with an extremely relevant subject: the need to talk about the Amazon rainforest and the local communities, besides the important work of the activists in such context. “Aruanas is a show that takes girl power and collective strength to a whole new level! Furthermore, it is also the first series in the world produced with the social impact premises of a @bcorporation. Throughout the entire production we committed ourselves to make decisions that consider the long-term impact on the community and the environment”, explained Luana Lobo, from Maria Farinha Films.

The sustainability permeated all the production: the series used a blockchain platform to neutralize its CO2 emissions and reused 90% of the wardrobe, recycling second-hand clothes and generating fewer residuals. During the shooting in the Amazon region, local actors and extras represented 33,8% of the cast. Besides that, from July to October, 50% of the sales on the site aruanas.tv will be donated to an initiative for the protection of the Amazon rainforest.

Besides the successful case of ‘Aruanas’, Globo also presents at MIPCOM a catalog including recently released titles and others never seen in the world. Among the exclusive titles are the series ‘Where My Heart Is’, a drama that shows how drug addiction shakes the life and the relations of a young doctor, and the supernatural thriller ‘Unsoul’. On the other hand, the series ‘Second Call’, a co-production of Globo and O2 Filmes, opened in Brazil on October 8th and is already available on the international catalog. The plot deals with the difficulties of adults and young adults in the night shift at a Brazilian public school.

With a strong social appeal, the third season of the awarded series ‘Under Pressure’ is now part of the international catalog. In this new phase of the story, the drama follows the heroic medical team in their daily struggle against the precarity of the public healthcare system in Brazil and their personal dilemmas. Co-produced with Conspiração Filmes, the series has the protagonist Marjorie Estiano among the nominees for the Emmy International Awards in the category “Best Actress” for her performance on season 2.

Completing the catalog, Globo also releases at MIPCOM season 2 of ‘Iron Island’, a series that is highlighted by its visual effects. To bring P137, the oil platform that is the epicenter of the story, to life, it was built a scenographic platform of 3,000 m² at Globo Studios thanks to an immense work on CGI besides the reproduction of storms in open sea, explosions, persecutions and gunfire with visual effects.
