HOW THE MEDIA CONSUMPTION IS CHANGING IN THE LOCKDOWN PERIOD?

Jason Mander, Chief Research Officer at Global Web Index, explains the different consuming behaviors around the world in the quarantine period, while predicts what is going to happen when the pandemic comes to an end.

The research company Global Web Index elaborated a report about how the media consumption is changing around the world in the lockdown period. To know more about it, Señal News interviewed Jason Mander, Chief Research Officer at Global Web Index of the company who explained in detail the report.

The company has been speaking with the consumers every week trying to understand how  their behaviors and attitudes have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic and the analysis was made in two different periods. “One was in the middle of March, when countries like Italy were already in the lockdown but other ones like the UK already started that period and we asked again at the end of March when I think it’s fair to say that most countries were what we call full lockdown by that period,” detailed Mander.

The first way of the research showed a sort of explosion of people trying different media activities such as social media, newspapers, magazines, news streaming radio and also activities like cooking, spending more time on hobbies and pastimes. “Actually the majority was spending more time on lots of different things and that is understandable because we all found ourselves in our homes for a longer period of time,” indicated the executive.

The report of Global Web Index is very interesting because it analyses the behavior of two different age groups, 16-24 and the baby boomers. Regarding the first, they are doing more pretty much everything and actually in that age group we’ve seen some decline between wave one and wave two,” he affirmed.

According to the older age group, the baby boomers, one of Global Web Index predictions will be deepening levels of digital engagement. “Actually they might catch up a little bit with some of the younger groups who have always been considered the leaders of those activities,” highlighted Mander.

In opinión of the Chief Research Officer at Global Web Index, as soon as the lockdown ends, whatever that is in each respective country, “we will probably see an immediate not quite backlash but people aren’t going to want to continue doing the things that they’ve been doing now,”
