CBC unveiled fall Lineup: New series, returning favorites, and documentaries

CBC's fall 2024 schedule will offer a slate of new and returning programming, including documentaries, beloved series, and fresh content for kids.

CBC has unveiled its fall streaming and broadcast lineup, packed with a diverse range of new and returning original series on CBC Gem and CBC TV. The season includes over 20 series and specials from Canadian creators. The first episode of each series will be available on CBC Gem at 9 a.m. ET on their respective premiere dates, with new episodes released weekly. CBC TV will air these series according to local broadcast times, with Newfoundland and Labrador viewers needing to add half an hour to all times.

NEW CANADIAN ORIGINAL SERIES

A highlight of the fall schedule is "Paid in Full: The Battle for Black Music," a three-part documentary series co-commissioned with the BBC. Narrated by Canadian music icon Jully Black and produced by Idris and Sabrina Elba, this series dives deep into the history of racial injustice within the music industry. It examines the ongoing fight for fair compensation and racial justice by Black artists from the industry's inception to the digital age. All episodes will be available on CBC Gem on September 21, with a CBC TV premiere on October 23 at 8 p.m.

"The Knowing," another significant new series, is set to premiere on September 25. This four-part documentary series, created by journalist, filmmaker, and Anishnaabe author Tanya Talaga, had its world premiere at TIFF 2024. It offers a deeply personal exploration of Canada’s Indian residential school system, interwoven with the experiences of the women in Talaga's maternal family.

RETURNING SERIES

Several fan-favorite series are returning this fall. "You Can’t Ask That" begins its third season on September 13 on CBC Gem, continuing to provide a platform for disabled Canadians to candidly share their experiences. The series will also air on CBC TV on September 18 at 11:30 p.m.

The satirical news program "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" kicks off its 32nd season on September 17 at 8 p.m., featuring a special one-hour U.S. election episode on November 4. Other returning favorites include "The New Wave of Standup," which premieres its fourth and fifth seasons on September 24 at 9:30 p.m. on CBC TV, with Season 5 available for streaming on CBC Gem starting September 6.

"Dragons’ Den" returns for its 19th season on September 26 at 8 p.m., introducing new Dragon Brian Scudamore, founder and CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, and celebrity guest Dragon Simu Liu, who will appear in four episodes.

"Heartland" continues with its 18th season, premiering on September 29 on CBC Gem and October 6 at 7 p.m. on CBC TV. "Murdoch Mysteries" also returns for its 18th season on September 30 on CBC Gem, with a CBC TV premiere on October 7 at 8 p.m. This season introduces Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as the new Inspector at Station House 4 and celebrates the show’s 300th episode.

"The Great Canadian Baking Show" is back for its eighth season on October 6, and "Still Standing" returns for its 10th season on October 8 at 8:30 p.m., with host Jonny Harris continuing his journey through small towns across Canada.

CBC NEWS AND SPORTS

CBC News’ flagship investigative series "The Fifth Estate" celebrates its 50th anniversary this fall, returning on October 11 at 9 p.m. with a special project focusing on the decline of local journalism across Canada. "Marketplace," CBC News’ consumer affairs program, also returns on October 11 at 8 p.m., with a new season dedicated to tackling issues like organized crime and the challenges posed by AI in fraud prevention.

For sports enthusiasts, CBC Sports will continue to cover high-performance athletes throughout the fall, including events like the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Montreal (October 25-27) and the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup in Tremblant (December 7-8). The network will also cover the USports Championships, including the Vanier Cup on November 23 in Kingston, Ontario, and provide coverage of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, including Skate Canada from October 25-27 in Halifax.

CBC KIDS ORIGINALS

CBC Kids is also launching new and returning series for young viewers this fall. "Go Togo," a new preschool series using animatronic characters, premieres on September 2. This series introduces young children to early math concepts through the adventures of Togo the subway car and his friends in the big city of Transitville.

The animated series "Jeremy & Jazzy" returns for its second season on September 2 on CBC Gem, with CBC TV airing starting September 9. A spinoff, "Playing with Stu," debuts the same day, following the fun-filled explorations of Stu the mouse and his friends. Finally, "Bestest Day Ever with My Best Friend" returns for its second season on November 22 on CBC Gem and November 24 on CBC TV, featuring adorable animals and celebrating the bond between kids and their pets.
