A+E Global Media announced a new partnership between A+E Japan and Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, on an hour-long documentary exploring the cultural history of Japanese cuisine entitled The Art of Washoku, Honoring Nature and the Seasons.

The documentary will premiere across multiple regions airing A+E’s History brand, beginning on Saturday, March 8 on Sky History 2 in the UK, on Saturday, March 29 across Sky and H2 Pan Euro, Monday, March 31 on History in Southeast Asia, and on May 4 on History in Japan, and marks the first-ever food-focused production by the Agency.

It takes viewers on a journey through Japan’s rich culinary heritage, celebrating the beauty and artistry of Washoku, or Japanese cuisine, which has been recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Among the items featured are the unique smoked and fermented pickled delicacy known as Iburigakko from the Akita Prefecture, located in Japan’s Tohoku region, Kiritanpo, a unique rice dish, and osechi-ryori, the traditional New Year’s feast.

Managing Director of A+E Japan and Southeast Asia John Flanagan considers the production a celebration of Japanese culture: “A+E Japan is thrilled to partner with Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs on a project that unearths a deeper meaning behind the country’s rich and intricate food culture. The visual beauty of Japanese food often captures our attention, but this program goes a step further to reveal the fascinating history behind the ingredients, intricate tea ceremonies, traditional sweets, and even tableware and knives that are passed down from generation to generation and make the Japanese culinary experience so unique," commented.
