Arthur Fleck isn't amused: Disney and Marvel Studios’ "Deadpool & Wolverine" has achieved its destiny, joining 'Joker' as the second R-rated film to gross $1 billion at the global box office.
The film needed three weekends to reach that milestone, grossing a strong $54 million domestically this weekend to bring its total to $494 million in North America and an estimated $535 million overseas. With $1.02 billion grossed, Disney is the first studio ever to have back-to-back releases reach $1 billion, as Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” crossed that mark last month and will pass $1.6 billion in the coming week.
The Deadpool series that began its life at 20th Century Fox is a huge win for franchise mastermind Ryan Reynolds, as well as for Marvel Studios and the superhero genre in general. It’s the first superhero movie to cross $1 billion since Sony and "Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home" two and a half years ago, and the first Marvel/Disney MCU pic to cross the $1 billion threshold since "Avengers: Endgame in 2019".
Since its debut the film has steadily broken multiple records, including surpassing the entire lifetime earnings of the first two Deadpool films both domestically and globally in just two weekends. The first Deadpool earned $363.1 million domestically and $782.6 million worldwide, while the second film made $318.5 million domestically and $734.5 million globally.
