Emmy-nominated animated series "Alma’s Way" from Fred Rogers Productions, created by Sonia Manzano, presents its first-ever musical special, “Alma’s Summertime Musical,” on June 9 on PBS KIDS.  The half-hour special features lively choreography by Emmy-nominated Ebony Williams ("In the Heights"), marking her first time choreographing for animation. In addition, the musical special includes original songs by Joel Someillan and George Cuttingcane of Jollipop Entertainment ("Dora the Explorer").

In the new special, when Sonny Soto hosts a contest for the kids of the Bronx to write the ultimate “Song of Summer,” Alma and Eddie are excited to enter, but first, they need to figure out what their song should be about. Should it be about Puerto Rico, where they’ve just visited family, or about the Bronx, their everyday home? As they search for inspiration, their journey takes them from the island back to the city, leading them to the realization that they don’t have to choose between the two places they love. Both make them happy, and they belong to both communities. Their song can reflect every part of who they are.

The special also highlights how music can be a tool for storytelling and self-expression. From Rafia and André’s vibrant Bollywood-inspired rap about life in the Bronx to Howard’s pop ballad all about his love for, well…himself, each song reflects what matters most to Alma and her friends.
