M-Net and Fremantle’s crime thriller Reyka will be returning for a second season. In addition, the spy thriller and family drama No Man’s Land has been renewed for a second season, welcoming returning stars.
From writer and creator Rohan Dickson, “Reyka” will welcome returning actors, South African-born actress Kim Engelbrecht and acclaimed British actor Iain Glen. The title will premier on M-Net in late 2023 with production kicking-off in early January next year. All episodes of Reyka season 1 are available for streaming on Showmax. “We are extremely proud of Reyka, our first South African drama, and all that it has achieved. The first series received an incredible reception when it launched last year, not just in South Africa, but around the world with our incredible broadcaster partners, – further reinforcing the global appeal of the series” said Julie Hodge, VP Editorial, Global Drama for Fremantle and Executive Producer for Reyka. “We are looking forward to working with the incredibly talented team again to bring season two to screen.”
The series is jointly produced by Serena Cullen for Serena Cullen Productions in the UK and Harriet Gavshon for Emmy nominated Quizzical Pictures in South Africa. Executive Producers are Serena Cullen, Harriet Gavshon and Rohan Dickson. Nomsa Philiso and Jan du Plessis executive produce for M-Net, and Julie Hodge for Fremantle. “Reyka is one of the leaders in our international co-production journey, and it’s performed exceptionally well both locally and in other territories. An international co-production between M-Net and Fremantle, who also handle global distribution, the series has earned acclaim around the world for its strong performance, cinematography and storylines. The title won four accolades at the 2022 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA’s) and was also nominated for Best Drama at the 50th International Emmy Awards – with Engelbrecht nominated in the Best Actress category.
Season 1 of the unique and ground-breaking English language drama follows the story of titular character Reyka (Kim Engelbrecht), a crime profiler hunting an elusive serial killer in KwaZulu-Natal’s sugarcane fields, all while facing her past traumas. “Season 2 promises to be even more compelling than season 1”, said Quizzical Pictures Creative Director and Reyka producer Harriet Gavshon.“It’s a challenge, but we’re excited by it. This time, Reyka is working in the harbour, where she comes across stowaways, smuggling, prostitution and of course, another serial killer… And her abductor Speelman is very much alive,” she added.
“No Man’s Land” has added season regulars Mélanie Thierry as Anna / Shamaran, Souheila Yacoub as Sarya, James Krishna Floyd as Nasser, Dean Ridge as Paul. Featuring a stellar international cast, season two will also comprise of new cast members Leo Hatton and Zed Josef. “With the first season, we were able to bring audiences a gritty war thriller unlike any other and were delighted by the cultural conversation generated by these characters and their stories,” Maria Feldman, Producer / Creator, said. “Now I am excited to tell more stories about these vibrant, bold characters — played by these powerful, amazing talents, where we have the chance to develop the story and show audiences what is next for the protagonists.”
The spy thriller and family drama, commissioned by ARTE and Hulu, and produced by Haut et Court TV, Masha and Spiro Films in co-production with Fremantle. Principle photography began yesterday in Morocco. Created by Masha’s María Feldman and Spiro’s Eitan Mansuri, No Man’s Land is written by Amit Cohen (False Flag) and Ron Leshem (Euphoria), and co-produced by Fremantle, who will distribute internationally.
Season two is produced by Feldman for Masha, Mansuri and Jonathan Doweck for Spiro Films, Caroline Benjo, Simon Arnal and Carole Scotta for Haut et Court TV, and co-produced by ARTE France. Fremantle’s Christian Vesper will also co-produce. Lionsgate+ (formally Starzplay UK) and OSN, will also renew for season two. The second season will take a look into the situation in Syria and the Middle East through a very human story and strong, relatable characters, portraying the unique world of Kurdish fighters and is set to combine heart-racing espionage action with deep emotional drama. The title received millions of viewers across 114 territories and won Best Non-English Language Drama Series at the C21 Awards in 2021.
