Love Nature has greenlit “Life on the Edge,” a premium three-part wildlife documentary series exploring the diverse ecosystems and animal behavior along North America’s Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic coastlines. Announced during the Jackson Wild Summit, the series is being produced by award-winning UK-based Passion Planet and Vancouver’s River Road Films, in collaboration with PBS (U.S.), ARTE France, and CBC (Canada).
Alison Barrat, SVP, Head of Content for Love Nature, said, “This series embodies what Love Nature does best, bringing audiences into the heart of wild places with powerful storytelling and stunning visuals. ‘Life on the Edge’ features stories of animals adapting to climate change on the wild North American coasts, living their lives at a pivotal moment in time as their habitats transform in ways they never experienced before.”
David Allen, managing director of Passion Planet, added, “It has been an absolute privilege to immerse ourselves in incredible stories that link an entire continent. In a changing world, the great wildlife spectacles of North America are rewriting our understanding of both the fragility and the resilience of nature.”
Jeff Turner, executive producer at River Road Films, noted, “With this series, we’ve been able to tell new and incredible wildlife and nature stories in details that have rarely, if ever, been seen before, which is a great achievement in the natural history space.”
The 3 x 60-minute series will premiere in 2026, airing in the U.S. on PBS and globally on Love Nature. CBC will feature the series as part of its long-running science and nature strand “The Nature of Things,” under the special banner “Wild Canadian Waters.” The program will also air on Sky Nature in the UK, Germany, and Italy as part of Love Nature’s expanding content partnership with Sky. Blue Ant Studios is overseeing pre-sales and licensing outside of the commissioning territories.
“Life on the Edge” takes viewers to the intersection of land and sea, revealing how wildlife is adapting in some of the planet’s most rapidly changing environments. Species featured include bald eagles, black bears, garter snakes, humpback whales, polar bears, narwhals, grey seals, and blacktip sharks. In addition to showcasing iconic species, the series will include Indigenous perspectives, underlining the interconnectedness of people, place, and nature in coastal ecosystems.
Produced by Oliver Twinch and David Allen for Passion Planet and Jeff Turner for River Road Films, the series is executive produced by James Manfull on behalf of Love Nature. For CBC, production is overseen by Sally Catto, Jennifer Dettman, Sandra Kleinfeld, Lesley Birchard, and Sue Dando.
“Life on the Edge” continues Love Nature’s strategy of investing in cinematic, globally relevant natural history programming that pairs scientific storytelling with high-end production values to serve an international audience across platforms.
