"Unwelcomed"
Following its world premiere in the International Spectrum Competition at Hot Docs—where it won the Emerging International Filmmaker Award—"Unwelcomed" ("Si Vas Para Chile") produced by Amilcar Films, Pejeperro Films, and Someday Production and represented for international sales by Jambika Docs, continues its remarkable festival journey with its European premiere confirmed at Sheffield DocFest 2025. The film is also selected for the Sydney Film Festival, screening in the International Documentaries section.
Directed by Sebastián González and Amílcar Infante, "Unwelcomed" captures a harsh and urgent reality unfolding in South America today. Sparked by an unprecedented influx of migrants from Venezuela, Chile has witnessed violent anti-immigrant protests, with communities responding aggressively against families fleeing one of the largest migration crises in the world.
The film offers a poignant chorus of testimonies—floating over majestic cinematography—that sheds light on a new era in the history of migration: one where those escaping conflict and economic collapse are received not with compassion, but with hostility.
"Our world premiere at Hot Docs was an incredible experience — full houses, engaged audiences, and meaningful conversations. Migration is a universal issue, and the award reflects how deeply it resonates across generations. This recognition gives us momentum to keep raising visibility and expanding distribution," says director Sebastián González.
After earning early attention from festival programmers and the international press, "Unwelcomed" now moves to Sheffield, further cementing its place as one of 2025’s most urgent and visually striking documentaries. The film was previously featured at CPH: FORUM, Cannes Docs, and Sunnyside of the Doc, where it won several development awards in 2024.
