The content market is seeing a strategic shift as animated series based on video games gain significant traction, according to a recent report from Ampere Analysis. The study reveals that announced commissions for game‑to‑anime adaptations increased by 137% in 2024 compared with the previous year. This surge placed games ahead of comics and established them as the third‑largest source of animated adaptation IP behind only manga and books.
Ampere’s analysis also highlights that game‑based streaming titles are resonating strongly with audiences. For example, game‑based Netflix original animation series were found to be about 40 times as popular as other original animation titles on the platform during Q2 2025. Notable successes include "Arcane: League of Legends" and "Devil May Cry," which drew significant viewership early in their run.
The data indicate a compelling opportunity for game publishers and production studios to convert existing gaming audiences into fans of animated adaptations. After the April 2025 launch of the "Devil May Cry" animated series, Ampere tracked a 313% increase in monthly active users for the underlying game. This demonstrates how adaptation IP can drive both content viewership and gaming engagement.
Europe in particular shows expanding potential: anime fandom among internet users aged 18‑64 grew from 23% to 26% in Germany between Q3 2020 and Q3 2025, while Finland saw growth from 25% to 34% over the same period. The findings suggest that as anime continues to globalize, the cross‑pollination of gaming IP into animated formats will be a key strategic lever for content companies.
Katie Holt, Senior Analyst at Ampere Analysis, said: “Long‑term audience expansion among anime fans and gamers will drive the growth of commissions in the coming years. While Japanese content has long been the first choice for adaptation, as anime fandom becomes more globalised, we will see a rise in animated adaptations from other sources — including from Western IP.”
For media companies and studios, these insights underscore the growing value of transmedia strategies. By tapping into established game franchises, the animation sector can capitalize on existing fan bases, broader merchandising opportunities, and cross‑platform engagement. As competition in content intensifies and streaming markets mature, game‑to‑anime adaptations represent a savvy approach to amplifying IP value and expanding global reach.
