“The Boys”
In its latest study about SVOD demand in Canada, Parrot Analytics revealed which were the most outstanding series in the country during September. The company contextualized each title within the market by stating the show's performance as a difference from the average demand for a series in the market. A difference of 1x represents the market average and 10x means a series is ten times more in demand than the average TV show in this market.
In September, the digital original series most demanded in Canada was Amazon Prime Video's “The Boys,” which went directly to the top of the chart after nearly doubling its demand from August. This increase is due to the release of the second season, which premiered on September 4 with new episodes released weekly throughout the month. Over September, “The Boys” was 32.6 times more in-demand than the average series in the country.
Canadian demand for “Cobra Kai” in September also strongly increased from August. The YouTube Premium original series was added to Netflix Canada's library on August 28 and quickly became Canada's fourth most in-demand digital original series for September, showing that this increased availablity led many Canadians to discover the series.
Two “Star Trek” series were in the Canadian top ten digital originals: “Star Trek: Discovery” in eighth and “Star Trek: Picard” in tenth. Disney+'s “The Mandalorian” was also the second most demanded series, meaning that Canadian audiences strongly demanded three space-set sci-fi series this month.
Last month’s most in-demand digital original, Netflix's “The Umbrella Academy,” slipped to third in Canada for this past month. However, Netflix original series are still very well represented in the top ten: 50% of this month's most demanded digital originals in Canada were from Netflix.
