A study from Digital TV Research forecasted that global subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) customers will increase by 519 million between 2019 and 2025 to 1.161 billion, a rise of 81%, with 170 million added in 2020 alone. Disney+ and Netflix alone will contribute 460 million subscribers. “We have completely revised our forecasts for 138 countries in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic,” advised Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research. “A major impact of lockdown has been a steep rise in SVOD subscriptions.”

Digital TV research revised its forecast for all 138 countries to also consider the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The report consists of an executive summary, major SVOD players, including subscriber and revenue estimates by country between the years 2010-2025 for the largest platforms, and insight profile for the top 10 countries, such Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, to name a few.

Five global platforms will have 640 million paying SVoD subscribers by 2025. Disney+ is the leading platform, adding 176 million subscribers between 2019 and 2025, making its total 202 million. Netflix, which is known as one of “the most well-established platforms,” will add 91 million subscribers.

The share of the global SVOD total taken by domestic Chinese players will rise significantly given that no foreign platforms are expected to enter China. According to the research outfit, China’s domestic players will account for 23% of the global total by 2025.
