The jury of the II edition of the South International Series Festival announced the seven productions recognized on October 31. “Oderbruch” was recognized with the Best Fiction Series Award; “On Thin Ice: Putin vs. Greenpeace” received the Best Non-Fiction Series award; and “Joan” and “Alive, The Andes Plane Disaster” received the Audience Awards to the Fiction and Non-Fiction sections respectively. The list of winners is completed with the awards for Best Screenplay of Fiction Series, which has gone to “Joan”; Best Cast for “La vida breve”; and the Special Jury Prize for Non-Fiction Series, awarded to “SAC: En la mente criminal.”
This was announced at a press conference held by the festival, which was attended and chaired by Joan Álvarez, director of the event, who was accompanied by the presidents of the fiction and non-fiction juries, Rémi Tereszkiewicz and Ángeles González Sinde, respectively, along with the rest of the jury members.
In his speech, Álvarez thanked all the platforms and participants of South 2024 and announced that the balance sheet data would be available in a few days, as it had been decided to announce only the awards today, also as a sign of the reduction in the festival's activities due to the events experienced.
For his part, Rémi Tereszkiewicz, President of the Fiction Jury, with Ana Torrent and Virginia Yagüe, announced the prizes awarded to the series that competed in this category. In particular, he explained why the jury had decided to award the prizes:
Best Fiction Series to “Oderbruch,” highlighting that "thanks to the creativity of the series and the technical skill of its creators, this proposal becomes a captivating experience that plays with genres and suspense, achieving a perfect blend between the creative and the aesthetic, immersing the viewer in the story.”
Best Fiction Series Screenplay to “Joan,” noting that "thanks to the precision of its writing and a rhythm that gives great fluidity to the intrigue, the series combines a realistic and recognisable portrayal that deeply enriches the main character.”
Best Casting for “La vida breve,” stating that "this award is the result of a joint effort between the cast and directors to achieve the perfect sound that reflects the energy and talent of each of its members.”
In the non-fiction category, Ángeles González Sinde, with Julio Rojas and Sofía Squittieri, announced the winners and gave the following reasons:
Best Non-Fiction Series for “On Thin Ice: Putin vs. Greenpeace,” "for masterfully using audiovisual language to tell a first-person story of a geopolitical moment that marked a turning point in contemporary history in an exciting, accessible and relatable way.”
Special Jury Prize Non-Fiction Series for “SAC: En la mente criminal,” "for the delicate exercise of describing characters who explain the difficulty of police investigations from a human point of view that respects the dignity of all voices.”
The non-fiction jury also gave a special mention to “The History of Reggaeton,” "for its complex and rich portrayal of a society and its history through a vibrant and contemporary musical genre in a way that appeals to all audiences.”
However, it is not only the juries and official voices that have spoken today, but also the 1,580 members of the public who, with votes, have chosen “Joan” and “Alive, The Andes Plane Disaster” to win the Audience Awards for Best Fiction Series and Best Non-Fiction Series respectively.
In addition to these official awards, it was also announced that the South Boost Award, given by a jury made up of Sara Sevilla from the Spanish Film Commission, Isabel Cabrera, deputy director of RTVA, Manuela Ocón, production director of Movistar+, and Xelo Montesinos, general manager of Unicorn Content, went to the project La Roca by Rocío Sepúlveda (creator) and Teresa Segura (producer of Different Entertainment). The jury emphasised that the film "points to timeless human dilemmas that universal literature embraces. Gibraltar in the 1960s becomes, through this historical fiction, an unresolved conflict that shows that physical barriers do not serve their purpose of separating human emotions. A viable project, with a solid structure and a wide international projection.”
The jury also gave a Special Mention to “El futuro del ayer,” by Gorka Mata and Víctor Fernández (creators and co-producers Dracma 3D) and Ángel Tirado (co-producer Tarkemoto Films), stressing that "this docu-series has a very well-defined objective, with an original and committed approach, a solid structure and a selection of top-level interviewees.”
