Josh Cole
BBC Studios is expanding its high-end scripted business with the launch of BBC Studios Fiction, a new division dedicated to original and authored storytelling. Current Comedy lead Josh Cole has been promoted to Chief Creative Officer of Fiction and Comedy, overseeing both arms.
The new unit will sit within BBC Studios Productions, operating from London, Liverpool and Glasgow, and will complement BBC Studios Drama as well as scripted labels Clerkenwell Films, Firebird Pictures, Sid Gentle Films Ltd, Lookout Point, House Productions, Baby Cow, and other BBC Studios-backed indies.
The launch also reflects broader market trends, with scripted shows featuring comedic elements – such as "Death Valley", "Ludwig", "Black Ops" and "Good Omens" – performing strongly, several of which have been produced by BBC Studios Comedy.
Producers Michael Parke and Andrew Morrissey ("Time", "Kidnapped: The Chloe Ayling Story", "Smother") join from River Pictures as Creative Directors, bringing with them their current slate of projects. Their BBC Studios-backed indie River Pictures will be wound down. Meanwhile, Siân O’Callaghan, currently Director of Production for Drama, will extend her remit to become Director of Production for Fiction & Comedy, overseeing strategic and business planning across all non-label scripted productions.
Cole said the creation of BBC Studios Fiction builds on the success of BBC Studios Comedy, which he has developed into a hub for distinctive, genre-defining voices. He described the new venture, alongside the arrival of Parke and Morrissey, as an opportunity to expand creative ambitions.
FInally, Mark Linsey, MD of Scripted at BBC Studios, noted that the move represents a bold step forward for the scripted business. He highlighted Cole’s track record in strengthening BBC Studios Comedy and described the addition of Parke and Morrissey as a significant boost to future ambitions.
