"Martín, superheroes don't exist, legends do" is the new fiction series from You First and Beta Spain that deals with the life of the great basketball legend Fernando Martín, the first Spaniard to play in the NBA, the pioneer, the Real Madrid leader who marked an era and revolutionized this sport at a time of great change in Spain.
The turbulent and exciting 80s serve as a backdrop to tell the story of one of the icons of an entire generation. A man born to win, to compete and whose figure went far beyond the field of sport. Some called him "the Spanish James Dean", because his death in a car accident at the age of 27 shocked the whole country. Martín (Madrid, 1962), lived fast, very fast, and he was pure truth, pure conflict. A man who, without intending to, was capable of moving the world.
The turbulent and exciting 1980s serve as the backdrop for the story of one of a generation's icons. A man born to win and compete, whose image extended far beyond the realm of sport. His death in a car accident at the age of 27 shocked the entire country, prompting some to refer to him as the "Spanish James Dean." Martín (Madrid, 1962) lived quickly, very quickly, and he was pure truth and pure conflict. A man who, without intending to, was able to change the course of history.
This four-part series is a story not only about sport, Real Madrid and the NBA, but also about love, betrayal, friendship, commitment, team, winning, losing, music, the “Movida” movement, change, fame and passion. The fiction has two timelines, one in the present and the other in the 80s, when Martín's career developed, including the historic medal with Spain at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 84. It is told from the point of view of a present-day journalist who dives into the past and is based on the women who were important in Fernando's life.
Like the main character, Martín is a pioneering project. For the first time in our country a fictional series based on a real sports character is being made. A trend in the international arena with examples such as "Winning time, the Lakers of the 80s" (HBO max), Maradona (Amazon), Roberto Baggio (Netflix) or Monzón (Netflix). This is something that is already commonplace outside Spain, but which until now has been done here in dribs and drabs.
You First and Beta also want to be pioneers and lead this evolution in Spain with the joint development of this series.
For Juan Aisa, CEO of You First, "Martín is an internationally oriented title that will consolidate our commitment to the creation of original content. Its story is still a hidden treasure for many and especially outside Spain. Like many of the great series in history, this one is based on one thing: the truth. Martin broke through the walls beyond the epic. This is the story of a legend, the perfect imperfection of Fernando Martín".
For Javier Pérez de Silva, CEO of Beta Spain, "this is more than a fiction project. This is a life project. Of foreseeing our future, taking a look at the past and thus also understanding our present. In 2022, Fernando Martín would be 60 years old and although his short life was full of lights and shadows, it is an exciting challenge to bring it to fiction".
