Producing and distributing powerhouse Freemantle announced that internationally acclaimed director Justin Kurzel, and renowned writer Shaun Grant, will be in charge of the screen adaptation of Richard Flanagan’s literary classic “The Narrow Road to the Deep North”.

Kurzel and Grant have both built significant trajectories in the entertainment industry, receiving endless accolades at different festivals including the Australian Academy of Cinema, Television, and Arts (AACTA). Grant’s credits as a writer include the acclaimed Netflix series Mindhunter and the film Macbeth, starring Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard.

Regarding this new project, Joe Porter, Freemantle Scripted Content Director, said: “This novel by Richard Flanagan is a masterpiece that has had a significant impact on readers in Australia and the world. We needed a screenwriter and director up to the challenge of bringing this tragic, heroic and shocking story to the screen, and Justin and Shaun were exactly that, plus, they share our same passion for this project. We are very excited to announce we will be working together in this series.”

Freemantle recently announced different dramatic projects in their pipeline, including “Mosquito Coast” with Justin Theroux in the leading role, as well as a series for Showtime called Gormenghast, based on an adaptation of Mervyn Peake’s books. More news on “The Narrow Road to the Deep North”, including its cast, will be announced in 2020.
