Australian indie, iKandy Films premiered its new documentary "How to Poison a Planet" (1x78) in New York City last week attended by a near sold out crowd. The award-winning film, represented for international distribution by TVF International, features star of Dark Waters, Mark Ruffalo, and the real-life lawyer he played, Rob Bilott and exposes how toxic PFAS chemicals came to poison every corner of the globe.

With exclusive access to the largest litigation involving water contamination in US history, the film follows a powerhouse legal team as they prepare for trial against chemical conglomerate and manufacturers of PFAS, 3M, for their role in contaminating drinking water across the United States. The film was commissioned by Australian streamer Stan and has already won awards for its investigation.

Based on damning internal documents and powerful video depositions, the legal team allege 3M was aware of the risks associated with toxic PFAS chemicals for decades. With 3M opting to settle the $12.5 billion lawsuit the night before the trial began, the case against them has never been heard – until now.

The contamination of drinking water with PFAS is linked to shocking cancer clusters around the world, and the film visits some of the worst-affected communities from rural Australia to the United States.

The film’s director Katrina McGowan commented: "This film was four years in the making and lifts the lid on an issue that affects every person on the planet. These chemicals are in our water and our food and the blood of 98% of the world’s population. We can’t protect ourselves if we don’t know the chemicals are there and we hope to see this film raise much needed awareness and create real impact with a global audience."

Actor and activist, Mark Ruffalo states: “This documentary exposes one of the biggest environmental disasters in human history. Without a concerted effort from all levels of business and government, ongoing contamination will continue to endanger the environment and our health.”
