An unprecedented line-up of Estonia’s top creative talents will partner with Nordic streaming company Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT Group) to create the first-ever Estonian Viaplay Original. Helmed by award-winning director René Vilbre and written by Birk Rohelend, the tense crime drama “Who Shot Otto Mueller?” stars Jaan Rekkor, Tambet Tuisk and Märt Avandi, and will premiere exclusively on NENT Group’s Viaplay streaming service in Estonia and across the Baltic region.
In the Viaplay Original “Who Shot Otto Mueller?,” a famous businessman and former Soviet wrestling star is found murdered in his manor on his 65th birthday. Detectives interrogate eight family members in turn, and dark truths about a successful and powerful man who once killed a wolf with his bare hands gradually come to light. Everyone has a story about Otto Mueller – and everyone has a motive.
“This groundbreaking show says everything about Viaplay’s storytelling ambitions for Estonia. By bringing together the best local talents to tell the most relevant local stories, we want to help take Estonian streamed content to the next level. ‘Who Shot Otto Mueller?’ gives a smart, complex and very Estonian twist to a classic crime format proven to thrill audiences everywhere,” commented Filippa Wallestam, Chief Content Officer at NENT Group.
“Who Shot Otto Mueller?” is produced by Tallinn-based Cuba Films, a production company with ten years’ background in series and TV commercials whose works have received recognition at Estonia’s prestigious Golden Egg festival. Filming will begin in September near Tallinn.
● “SISTERHOOD,” THE NEXT ICELANDIC VIAPLAY ORIGINAL
On the other hand, the company announced that its latest Icelandic Viaplay Original is the psychological crime drama “Sisterhood”. The six-episode series stars Lilja Nótt Þórarinsdóttir, Jóhanna Friðrika Sæmundsdóttir and Eddan Award winners Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir and Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir. “Sisterhood” will premiere on Viaplay in 2022.
Who was really responsible for a young girl’s disappearance in Iceland 25 years ago? Ambitious police detective Vera, dissatisfied with the original investigation, is led to an unlikely trio of successful and respectable women. Nurse Karlotta, minister Elisabet and chef Anna Sigga have long lived in the shadow of a terrible crime – and will go to any length to stop it coming to light.
“The new wave of Nordic noir often reaches beyond ‘whodunnit?’ to ask ‘why?’. Like our smash hit ‘Those Who Kill,’ ‘Sisterhood’ unfolds from the perpetrators’ perspective, creating an unsettling and compelling experience. High-quality local storytelling is key to our international expansion, and this unique show will be a milestone in establishing Viaplay’s position among Icelandic streaming audiences,” Wallestam said.
