Disney+ and Atresmedia have entered a landmark content partnership in Spain under which Disney+ subscribers will gain access to more than 300 hours of Spanish-produced content annually, starting this September. The deal establishes a dedicated Atresplayer hub inside the Disney+ app that will host new and returning Atresplayer originals, Antena 3’s linear series, and library content.

Karl Holmes, General Manager for Disney+ in EMEA, said: “Atresmedia consistently delivers popular, must-watch Spanish content including some of the country’s finest original productions. Adding hundreds of hours of Atresmedia shows to stream on Disney+ is great news for our customers in Spain. This deal also reflects our broader commitment to supporting local broadcasters across Europe including our recent collaboration in the UK with ITVX and ZDF in Germany.”

Atresmedia CEO Javier Bardají added: “This pioneering and unprecedented agreement with Disney+, one of the largest international streaming platforms, consolidates the leadership of Atresmedia and Atresplayer, reaffirming the success of their innovative content exploitation strategy. It allows us to expand the reach of our productions, promoting Spanish talent and culture. Disney and Atresmedia share the quality and ambition of their content, as well as the care of their brands. It was only logical that we would meet.”

As of Q2 2025, Disney+ has 3.2 million subscribers in Spain, representing 16% of internet households. Despite investing $837 million in Spanish content in 2024, Ampere Analysis data shows Disney+ carried only 686 hours of locally made content in Spain in July 2025—just 3.6% of its catalogue hours—lagging behind Netflix’s 2,903 hours (5.9%) and Prime Video’s 6,742 hours (23%). The new Atresmedia deal therefore nearly doubles the amount of Spanish-produced material available on the platform.

Among the first titles to arrive in the new hub are "Mar afuera", premiering September 14, entertainment staples like "La Voz" and "Tu cara me suena", Antena 3 series such as "La Encrucijada" and "Sueños de libertad", and classic dramas like "Vis a Vis", "Física o Química", and "Aquí no hay quien viva".

For Atresmedia, the deal offers exposure to demographics not fully reached through Atresplayer alone: 12% of Spanish consumers already use Disney+ without subscribing to Atresmedia channels or platforms. That group skews young, with 44% under age 34. For Disney+, the partnership boosts local content credentials as it competes among large streaming platforms in Spain, leveraging Atresmedia’s catalogue to offer increased relevance and co-exclusive rights, while helping fulfill local content obligations.

The agreement marks a broader wave of broadcaster-streamer alliances in Europe, following Disney’s prior partnerships with ITV in the UK and ZDF in Germany, as global platforms increasingly rely on local content to deepen market penetration, meet regulatory quotas, and appeal to audiences in the under-34 segment.
