Sports-focused production company NEO Studios and Italian production company Roma Press announced that they are partnering with Diego Maradona Jr., the son of the legendary Argentinian soccer player, on a docuseries celebrating life and exploring the legacy of his father.

The four-part project, “He Was My Father” (working title), follows Diego Maradona Jr. as he tells the story of the complicated relationship with his father, who died in 2020. The soccer icon denied paternity for almost 30 years before acknowledging his son for the first time in 2016. The docuseries will also include never-before-released recordings, in addition to interviews with family, friends, and former teammates. "Maradona is widely regarded as one of the best soccer players of all time, but his life off the field was sensational as well, often drawing criticism. Through the lens of his first-born son, viewers will get unprecedented access into Maradona’s life and impact on sport,”  commented Anouk Mertens, CEO of NEO Studios.

“My father lived in the public eye, with all the controversy and speculation that goes along with that. Though it was a challenging road, it was also a great one that ultimately brought us together. It was important to me to set the record straight and to share my story – which is also my mother’s story – while honoring the true legacy of my father, Diego Maradona,”  Diego Jr. added.
