Netflix opens new offices in Rome and bets on Italian content

Netflix announced the opening of a new Italian office in Rome, situated in the heart of the city. The location will home around 70 members of staff and join existing European bases for the streamer in countries such as UK, Spain and France. Moreover, the streamer unveiled a new slate of Italian productions across scripted, unscripted and film.

"We’re expanding our premium films and incredible series here and we want to do all kinds of new content, not only from established producers but allowing new voices to share what is really unique about Netflix. These are stories that are Made in Italy and watched by the world," commented Reed Hastings, co-CEO of Netflix.

Among the new Italian series announced by Netflix is a show inspired by the novel “Il Gattopardo,” which is being produced by Indiana Production and Moonage Pictures; sentimental thriller “Inganno” (working title) from Cattleya; an Italian adaptation of UK series “Gold Digger”; “Lotto Gang” (working title) from BIM Produzione, which combines action and comedy; a new untitled animated series by Italian graphic novelist Zerocalcar; and a comedy titled “I Hate Christmas,” from Fremantle’s Lux Vide.

“The Italian series that we announced today, and which will come to Netflix in the coming years, reflect our ambitions to work with our Italian production partners to tell a variety of quality Italian stories. Together, we will create a breadth of stories, working with visionary creators and new voices who break barriers, take creative risks, and tell stories that have never been told before,”  commented Tinny Andreatta, VP of Italian language Series at Netflix.

The streamer also presented some unscripted projects, such as crime docu-series “Wanna” (Fremantle Italy); the first Italian Netflix original reality show, “Summer Job” (Banijay Italia); and “Running for the Truth: Alex Schwazer” (Indigo Film). Meanwhile, some highlights of the new Netflix Italian original films are: “Robbing Mussolini” (Bibi Film), “My Name is Vendetta” (Colorado Film), “Love & Gelato” (HT Film), "Under the Amalfi Sun" (Lucky Red), and "Jumping From High Places" (Lotus Film).
