During MIPCOM 2024, ICEX and Parrot Analytics showcased the international success of Spanish-origin content, revealing how it continues to captivate global audiences. Parrot Analytics presented data showing that content originating from Spain has generated an estimated $5.1 billion in global streaming revenue over the past four years. The success of iconic Netflix series such as "Money Heist" and "Elite" has paved the way for a new wave of diverse content, such as Amazon's "Red Queen," the AppleTV+ co-production "Land of Women," and Netflix's film "Nowhere," which have achieved international success. These results further consolidate Spain's position as a dominant player in the international content market, with its productions leading demand across European and Spanish-speaking countries.
According to Parrot Analytics' year-on-year growth data from 2023 to 2024, global demand for Spanish-origin content has experienced exponential growth across all regions: in UCAN (United States and Canada), it grew by 40%; in Latin America by 56%; in Europe by 73%; in Africa by 67%; in Asia by 100%; and in Oceania by 175%. Commenting on this, Jaime Otero, Vice President of Partnerships at Parrot Analytics, said: “I believe this reflects that Spanish content performs well. In the top 10% of content demand on platforms alone, there are 200 Spanish titles.”
These figures highlight the growing appetite for Spanish content worldwide. Parrot Analytics data also shows a 22% increase in the availability of Spanish series and films on major global streaming platforms since 2021, reflecting the growing investment in Spanish-origin content by these platforms.
Erik Rovina Mardones, Director of Creative Industries at ICEX, highlighted the importance of this alliance: "The $5.1 billion in global revenue generated by Spanish content over the past four years is a testament to the powerful impact our productions have on international audiences and their continued growth in popularity worldwide. Working with Parrot Analytics helps us provide our industry and creators with data-driven insights, allowing them to tap into booming global markets and maximize the international reach of their content."
Jaime Otero added: “We are proud to partner with ICEX to quantify the growing economic impact of Spanish film and TV content. The surge in demand worldwide is significant because it directly translates to higher revenues for major streaming platforms. This not only underscores the cultural impact of Spanish productions but also highlights the significant economic benefits they are generating globally.”
The report also highlights key performance metrics for leading Spanish titles: "Red Queen" ranked among the top five new series on Amazon Prime Video in 2024, driving substantial subscriber acquisition and renewal, and "Nowhere" became the number one non-English film on Netflix in 2023, acquiring and retaining the highest number of subscribers within its first 13 weeks of release.
Spanish productions are outperforming global demand averages, with standout titles like the Oscar-nominated "Society of the Snow" and "My Fault" reaching global demand peaks of 63x and 47.9x, respectively, compared to the global average for TV shows or films. “‘Society of the Snow’ contributed to the acquisition of 46,000 new Netflix subscribers and helped renew 630,000 subscribers during the second quarter of 2024, showcasing the power of Spanish productions to attract and retain audiences on global platforms,” concluded Otero.
