US STREAMING SERVICES INCREASE LICENSED CONTENT ACQUISITION

Disney was the leading large SVOD competitor in terms of exclusive content, at 89%. General family content has been in high demand amid the pandemic, while titles premiered straight on VOD platforms have tripled in the fourth quarter.

Recent research conducted by Reelgood has revealed that the leading subscription streaming services in the US have over the last twelve months been steadily increasing their catalogs of original TV shows amid its licensed content acquisition. Disney Plus Leads Major SVODs in Exclusive Content at 89% ahead of Netflix at 83%.

Netflix was the largest streaming producer of original series making up 39% of its TV shows catalog for the last year, a 14% increase in points from last year. To retain and acquire new users, the leading subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platforms were found to be working to maintain a high percentage of content in their libraries that cannot be housed in any other platform.

Almost 40% of Netflix's TV catalog is now original series, at 39%, a 25% increase from a year ago. Though HBO Max has 31% more originals than HBO Now did in January of last year, 330 more licensed show versus 40. HBO Max’s TV catalog is made up of 37% original series versus 78% for the legacy service. On the contrary, the report found that AVOD and TVOD platforms saw the most content catalog growth this year, with increases in the AVOD sector mostly driven by Tubi TV, Vudu Free, and the launch of Peacock's free tier.

While Amazon Prime Video claimed the title for having the largest number of films and TV shows, Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max quickly followed the trend. In terms of genre, family-friendly content has been in high demand and well indulged during the pandemic while straight-to-VOD films premiered tripled in the fourth quarter year-on-year.
