Curiosity Stream reaches 20 million subscribers during Q2 2021

The streamer specializing in documentaries reported a revenue of US$15.3 million and a net loss of US$8.3 million, predicting its ability to wrap up 2021 with a minimum of US$71 million in revenue.

Curiosity Stream has confirmed its ability to reach 20 million paying subscribers. “CuriosityStream delivered very strong results this quarter. We continue to be solidly on track with our plans for 2021," Clint Stinchcomb, president, and CEO of CuriosityStream said. "During the quarter, we grew direct subscribers 56% year-over-year while retaining a higher percentage of users who signed up in Q2 2020 than any other streaming service, based on data from ANTENNA."

The factual streaming service reported revenues of US$15.3 million, while its net losses stood at US$8.3 million. Its total revenues increased by US$12 million year-over-year, while its subscriber count surged by 40% during the same period. “This partnership bolsters our global reach by adding millions of subscribers in Europe, accelerates our growth through the addition of hundreds of hours of German-dubbed programming to our SVOD service, and extends our brand through the introduction of the Curiosity Channel in German-speaking Europe.”

The company said that it has projected revenue of at least US$71 million for the remainder of the year, which would result in an 80% year-over-year increase. Over 700,000 direct-to-consumer subscribers were recorded  last year. Clint Stinchcomb, CuriosityStream’s President & CEO said that direct subscribers were up 56% year-over-year meaning that they likely just over a million OTT subscribers.

The documentary-focused streamer was founded in 2015 by Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks.“We continue to deliver unprecedented value to our subscribers and partners in the factual category, having recently announced a landmark partnership with SPIEGEL TV, the leading producer, and distributor of high-quality factual content for German-speaking audiences.”
