Denmark is planning to introduce a tax on streaming services in order to help fund home-grown television and film output. According to local reports, the percentage of the tax could rise up to 5%.

Furthermore, streaming companies including Disney+, HBO and Viaplay will also be obliged to give an insight on their algorithms. A new center for Tech and Democracy will develop knowledge about the tech giants’ effects on democracy, cohesion and well-being, as well as contribute to policy development.

The move is part of a redistribution of support for the media from national titles to local and regional media, including support for the transition of printed media to digital formats. Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen, the Minister for Culture and Ecclesiastical Affairs, says she wants to strengthen the opportunity for media to fulfil their role in democracy.

“Denmark must take the lead in ensuring greater democratic control over the tech giants, who in a short time have gained enormous influence on our lives, our society and our community. I look forward to the forthcoming negotiations, where we must jointly secure the future of our democratic infrastructure,”  Jørgensen commented.
