A new report released by Digital TV Research has projected that Disney+ will surpass Netflix for global subscribers within five years. The new data reveals that the streaming platform will garner a global total of 294 million to Netflix’s 286 million.
The report follows Disney's reported 94.9 million subscribers during the first quarter of 2021. The company has surpassed its four-year goal within 14 months and has now set a goal of 230-260 million subscribers by 2024. According to Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, Disney+ Hotstar will debut in 13 Asian countries by 2026. "These countries will supply 108 million at 37% of the global Disney+ subscriber total, but only USD 2.62 billion at 13% of the platform’s revenues by 2026. Hotstar subscribers pay less than a third of the monthly subscription fee of their US counterpart," he said.
The researcher noted that Disney+ will only have more subs than Netflix in one country, India, where it is projected to boast 98 million Disney+ Hotstar subscribers compared with 13 million for Netflix. The report also predicted that by 2026 Amazon would be the third-largest SVOD company with 184 million subs followed by HBO with 50 million and Apple TV+ with 11 million. The total of Chinese operators is projected to amount to 279 million SVOD consumers and all others 284 million.
The SVOD Platform Forecasts report also highlighted that Disney+ Hotstar would contribute only USD 2.62 billion, 13%, of total platform revenues by 2026. This was due to Hotstar subscribers paying less than a third of the monthly subscription fee of their US counterparts. They calculated that total global revenues for Disney+ will be $20.76 billion by 2026, around half of Netflix’s $39.52 billion.
