Only two years after its launch, French streaming platform Salto could be shuttered as early as the end of this week. Salto was previously owned by France’s three biggest broadcasters, France Télévisions, TF1 and M6. However, these last two exited in November after their planned merger fell through.

Salto was launched in October 2020 as a broadcaster-backed alternative to Netflix, but according to local reports, some behind-the-scenes conflicts and a lack of customer appetite have disabled its chances of establishing itself properly. The service offered local programming from France TV, M6 and TF1, as well as numerous international shows.

Once the company is dissolved, its platform and technical assets could be sold to another company, with its 800.000 subscribers transferring to another streamer. If this does not happen, Salto will come to a hard stop. Amazon, along with French pay TV operator Canal+, had been linked with a potential acquisition of Salto in November, and French reports suggest a Spanish company named Agile had already explored a takeover but could not come to an agreement with shareholders.
