Streaming giant Netflix revealed its production strategy for Mexico in 2020 with a planned investment of USD $200 million in production and local talent, in order to generate more content as part of the expansion in the country. Reed Hastings, President and CEO of Netflix, confirmed that the platform has on its grid 50 projects to be carried out in Mexico for next year. “We are investing a lot in many countries, but the investment in Mexico is destined to 200 million dollars with the aim of continuing to tell stories that connect with the audience and show the different nuances of society.”

Hastings also indicated that the commitment to content should have a local focus, that should be appreciated worldwide.“I don't think we are better than other companies to create this type of content, what we want is to be the best company in series and movie creation. Although I feel we are doing well, we still have many stories to tell”. An example of 100% Mexican productions is Netflix original “La Casa de las Flores”  an absolutely innovative production in terms of format and story already on its second season. The dysfunctional De la Mora family and their twisted dynamics caused more than 6 million homes to tune in globally. The series, with the participation of the legendary Mexican actress and singer Veronica Castro and created by Manolo Caro, broke all the stereotypes of the classic Mexican soap opera by not being afraid of touching different topics.

Bela Bajaria, Director of International Original Content at Netflix said that with content like this, the platform guarantees that it is doing much more than just exporting Hollywood productions. “What we want is to give these stories is a platform to be told in the most authentic way possible. And we consider that the best way to do it is with local people, speaking the language, understanding where each action comes from, so it feels really honest,” she said. Among the projects already announced for 2020 with Mexican talent as a whole, musical comedies, feature films, comedies and short films stand out.
