In Western markets, only a small fraction on consumers game on one device exclusively. In contrast, the majority of gamers tend to regularly use a variety of platforms, according to Ampere Analysis’ “Understanding the multi-platform gamer in Western markets” webinar, spearheaded by Louise Shorthouse, Senior Analyst of Games at Ampere Analysis.

According to Ampere data, 17% of mobiles gamers play on mobile only, 12% of PC gamers play on PC only, and 13% of console gamers play on console only. Conversely, 83% of the respondents use mobile and other devices, 88% play on PC and other devices and 87% opt for console and other devices.

Console-mobile gamers are older, but PC-mobile gamer have higher income. At the same time, console is the most-played across all device groups, and it is not only where they tend to spend most of their time, but also the device they prefer to spend their time on.

Regarding the preferred time of day to play, for non-mobile gamers, mornings are dedicated to console play. Mobile gaming takes precedent in the morning, but remains relatively static post 2 PM. For all platform users, both console and PC outweigh mobile.

All-device gamers - those who use mobile, PC and console - are the most social. They like to keep up to date with the latest industry trends, like to cooperate with other gamers, create their own content, and think gaming is their main hobby. However, at the same time, many think they spend too much time gaming.

In terms of genres, sports, action/adventure and shooter are the favorite ones for most gamers. Although tastes vary by device, most of the gaming community shares a taste for these three styles of video games.
