“Munich Games”, the new, six-part Sky Original drama thriller series is set to receive its world premiere at the 39th Munich Film Festival as part of the renowned The New German Movie Section. The Sky Original is a co-production by Amusement Park Film, CBS Studios and Sky Studios and will be launched on September 4th, 2022 on Sky One across Germany, Austria, and German-speaking Switzerland, with other Sky markets across Europe to follow.
The series is produced by Amelie von Kienlin. Malte Grunert, Daniel Brühl from Amusement Park Film, Meghan Lyvers from CBS Studios as well as Frank Jastfelder, and Julia Jaensch from Sky Studios. Michal Aviram and Philipp Kadelbach serve as executive producers while Martin Behnke serves as co-executive producer. The production of ”Munich Games“ is supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF), the German Motion Picture Fund (GMPF), and the Czech Film Fund. Paramount Global Content Distribution will distribute the series outside of German-speaking territories, the United Kingdom, and Italy. ”Munich Games” is expected to be launched on September 4th on Sky One and will air in all Sky markets.
Creator Michal Aviram (“Fauda”) wrote the high-suspense political thriller together with Martin Behnke (”Berlin Alexanderplatz”), resulting in a story that could not be more topical for today’s audiences. Set 50 years after the brutal terrorist attack at the Olympic Games in Munich ’72, “Munich Games” sees Director Philipp Kadelbach (”Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo“) create a highly emotional drama on-screen alongside captivating shots from cinematographer Jakub Bejnarowicz (”Perfume“). The series brings together a multi-national and multi-lingual team in front of and behind camera and was shot in German, Hebrew, Arabic, and English.
The six-part series is set 50 years after the Munich Massacre; a traumatic terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team in 1972. It’s now 2022 and on the anniversary of the attack, Munich is hosting a ‘friendly’ soccer game between an Israeli and a German football club. Tensions and nerves are running high with the political stakes even higher as the eyes of the world watch. Everything is being done to make the match a safe and peaceful event, until things start to fall apart, it seems history might be repeating all over again.
