The number of gross subscription to video on demand services grew by 28% in 2019, according to Digital TV Research’s latest report, which also highlights that the net subscriber count rose by 55 million (16%) last year to total 403 million. These figures mean that gross subscriptions are growing faster than net subscribers with the average SVOD subscriber paying for 1.59 video on-demand subscriptions in 2019, up from 1.44 in 2018.

“The number of gross SVOD subscriptions increased by 139 million in 2019 to 642 million – having grown by a similar amount in 2018,”  said Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research.

In terms of nations, the United States overtook China in 2019 to regain its position as the gross SVOD subscription leader. With about 200 million subscribers each, both countries together accounted for 63% of the global total in 2019. The United States added 43 million subscriptions last year, while China added 35 million.

Digital TV Research’s “SVOD Databook” also noted that ten countries had more than 10 million SVOD subscriptions by end of 2019 – collectively providing 84% of the global total.
