Netflix + MAMAA (Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, and Apple) generate 48% of growing internet traffic, but their percentage contribution has gone down amid data surges from new apps, according to a new report by Sandvine.
The global ad market is on course to reach a value of US$1 trillion in 2025, with more than half of this money paid to just three companies – Alphabet, Meta and Amazon –, according to WARC Data.
While some giants saw an increase in revenue, such as Facebook, whose profit increased by 18%, and Alphabet's by 13%, other platforms such as Amazon experienced a drop in income from USD 3.6 million to USD 2.5 million and Twitter's stock fell by 7.8% by Thursday's closing despite its strong earnings during its first quarter in 2020.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google and YouTube, topped Wall Street estimates for Q1 revenue but fell short on net profit — and said ad sales had significantly fallen in March amid the coronavirus crisis.
