ITV Studios is the international distribution partner to Plimsoll Productions’ ambitious and innovative new natural history series, "A Year on Planet Earth" (6x60’ international version) for ITV. The series is from a highly specialised and multi award-winning natural history team, comprising Tom Hugh-Jones, (“Planet Earth II”), Andrew Jackson (“Frozen Planet”, “Deadly 60”) and Dr Martha Holmes (“Blue Planet”, “Life in the Freezer”).
A unique concept, "A Year on Planet Earth" will feature a story arc across the season, drawing viewers in over a number of episodes and unfolding like a drama. As such, the Global Content team led by Julie Meldal-Johnsen, is shopping the series in the same way it would approach a drama, bringing in international co-producers and deficit financing during the early stages of development.
Ruth Berry, Managing Director Global Distribution, ITV Studios, said, “We’re known for bringing some of the world’s most sought-after dramas to international audiences and are now thrilled to turbo-charge our premium factual content slate with this unique concept. In Andrew, Tom and Martha we have not one, not two, but three of the best natural history producers in the world bringing this exciting project to life.”
Andrew Jackson, President, International Production at Plimsoll Productions, said “Tom Hugh-Jones revived this genre with his amazing storytelling in 'Planet Earth II'. This series takes it up a notch. It gives Tom the perfect opportunity to supersize the natural drama, and craft a narrative story arc across the entire series to grip the audience like all the best scripted shows. It’s the first time it’s been done in a global natural history landmark.”
ITV's first brand new major natural history series for more than two decades draws on the most spellbinding and dramatic stories from all corners of the globe, "A Year on Planet Earth" is a new narrative approach, showcasing the many wonders of the world, revealing the incredible ways in which all life is connected and how massive natural events affect the lives of individual animals.
