Nordic region’s streaming company Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT Group) and premium global streaming platform Starz have announced a long-term agreement that makes NENT Group’s Viaplay streaming service the exclusive Nordic launch partner for Starz’s international premium streaming service Starzplay.
Beginning in December, a wide selection of acclaimed and exclusive Starzplay series will be available to Viaplay viewers across the Nordic region as part of their subscriptions, with the full Starzplay service to be offered through Viaplay to all Viaplay subscribers at a later date. Highlights of the Starzplay content coming to Viaplay this year include “Power Book II: Ghost” and international hits such as the Starz Original series “Power,” “The Spanish Princess,” “The Girlfriend Experience” and “Black Sails,” along with the Golden Globe-winning “Ramy”.
“Our latest groundbreaking partnership brings together two of the world’s most creative streaming storytellers. Viaplay Originals are now winning international awards while Starzplay is home to some of the most high-impact shows in the business. We continue to innovate in order to bring Viaplay viewers even more unique experiences,” said Filippa Wallestam, Group Chief Content Officer at NENT.
Meanwhile, Superna Kalle, Executive Vice President of International Digital Networks at Starz, added: “This trailblazing partnership with a leader who has demonstrated continued innovation in the industry creates an exciting opportunity for the expansion of Starzplay into new territories on Viaplay that allows us to continue our quest to offer the best of global SVOD to viewers around the world”.
● THE EUROPEAN STREAMING CHAMPION
After this deal with Starzplay, NENT announced its plans of becoming “a European streaming champion,” as it aims to roll out in ten international markets by the end of 2023, including Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the United States in 2021. By the end of 2025, the company aims to increase its subscriber base to approximately 10.5 million by more than doubling its Viaplay paying subscriber base in the Nordics to approximately 6 million, and growing its international subscriber base to approximately 4.5 million.
This acceleration in the Group’s development is expected to generate 18-20% compound annual organic sales growth for 2020-2025, with the Nordic operations generating 13-15% growth.
“Viaplay is a proven Nordic success story and we are now ready to expand internationally and become the European streaming champion. We have one of the world’s most flexible and scalable technology platforms, and aim to be the most diverse and inclusive storyteller with our amazing range of original, acquired, local and live content that offers something special for everyone. We have already signed up key content rights in our target markets, and are in discussions with distributors about exciting new partnerships to ensure that Viaplay is available everywhere,” commented Anders Jensen, President and CEO at NENT Group.
