Premium CANAL+ Original fast-paced drama "Spinners", a co-production between African streaming service Showmax and CANAL+, has been acquired by Brazilian TV giant Globo in a deal brokered by Studiocanal. The eight-part series premiered across Sub-Saharan Africa on Showmax and on CANAL+ in Africa in November and will soon launch on CANAL+ in France.

"Spinners" revolves around the popular and dangerous South African motor sport of Spinning, which sees cars driven at high speed with drivers performing stunts in and out of the vehicle. Creating stunning high production values, the series is a hybrid mix of this dynamic and electrifying sport, an intriguing gangster and crime investigation and an extremely moving coming-of-age storyline.

Anne Chérel, EVP Global Sales and Distribution, Studiocanal comments, “We are extremely pleased to see this strong drama travel to Globo in Brazil. High-octane series 'Spinners' highlights the terrifying pursuits that young adults in South Africa are gripped by, as well as revealing the difficult and nerve-wracking life they must continually navigate.”

Ethan is a 17-year-old driver working for a local gang, run with an iron fist by Damien. Trying to support his younger brother but increasingly disgusted with this life and constantly on the edge, Ethan discovers a possible way out via spinning, an intense local sport where he could put his driving skills to use. But the looming gang war jeopardizes that hope. The cast includes Arendsvlei’s Cantona James and Chelsea Thomas in leading roles, along with South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) winner Brendon Daniels (Zulu, Skemerdans, Five Fingers for Marseille) and local celebrity Dillon Windvogel (Blood & Water).

Produced by Joachim Landau and Raphaël Rocher for Empreinte Digitale and co-produced by Ramadan Suleman, Spinners’ local co-production company is Natives at Large. Directed by Jaco Bouwer and produced and co-created by Joachim Landau, Spinners’ showrunner and co-creator is Benjamin Hoffman.
