ZDF Studios has agreed to globally distribute "Smart Swarms" and co-produce "Restless Planet.""The scientists involved in making this production, their experiments and findings add another layer to this fascinating subject," Ralf Rueckauer, Vice President Unscripted, ZDF Studios, said. "Combined with beautifully filmed scenes of nature's swarms, this is a documentary that will captivate audiences everywhere."
Produced by SPIEGEL TV for ZDF's renowned Terra X slot, the two-part documentary will be scheduled for completion in mid 2023, "Smart Swarms" offers scientific insights and gripping excursions into cutting-edge technology, traveling through various habitats alongside diverse organisms. "High-tech labs of researchers attempt to break swarm-codes, explain strange collective behaviours and explore the possible application of swarm intelligence to the latest technological advances," a recent report related to the title reads. "The documentary is a mesmerising mix of aesthetic beauty and incredible facts that combine to delight and excite at the same time."
The first part, labeled "Puzzling Powers," focuses on the powers within different natural swarms. From a giant flock of starlings to ant nests, beehives, a shoal of sardines and ladybird colonies, what might at first seem like disorganised chaos soon reveals itself as complex, purposeful, ancient and intelligent cooperation between individuals acting in a coordinated system for the benefit of its members. Yet different swarms follow different patterns, follow different strategies and fulfil different purposes. Part 2, named "Cryptic Codes," is based on breaking their mysterious codes and communication, and showcases experts' quest to comprehend the organized chaos and intelligence of natural swarms sits at the core of these films while allowing the viewer the chance to be wowed with their astonishing beauty and incredible displays of coordination.
Produced by ZDF Digital, a subsidiary wholly owned by ZDF Studios, in association with Curiosity and its flagship streamer Curiosity Stream, as well as ZDFinfo, "The Curiosity" is now filming in eight locations, which include Chile, Australia, Indonesia, Iceland, USA, Canada, Switzerland and Germany. The title will be delivered in June 2023 and ZDF Studios will handle all international sales outside of the co-production partner’s rights.
The original science documentary portrays the dramatic history of our planet and the catastrophes that determined Earth’s fate. "Restless Planet is an extraordinary series based on all the latest research with the involvement of some of the world’s top experts in the fields of planetology, science, geology, physics and biology," Ralf Rueckauer, Vice President Unscripted, ZDF Studios, said. "This is also a timely and thought-provoking documentary as we face the ever-growing threat of climate change."
