The European streaming landscape in the first half of 2025 has been defined by Netflix’s unshakable leadership and the record-breaking social traction of "Squid Game 3", according to GECA’s latest "Semi-Annual Social Impact Report". The study, which measures the online presence and audience engagement of audiovisual productions across multiple platforms, confirms that Netflix remains the dominant force in social interest across all major European markets, with a 23.4% global share—almost four times higher than its closest competitor, Amazon Prime Video at 6.2%, and just ahead of Disney+ at 5.8%.

In Portugal, Netflix’s position is particularly striking, commanding 90.68% of social interest—leaving Amazon Prime Video in a distant second at 2.83% and Disney+ at 2.1%. In France, the platform leads with 30.14%, followed by Canal+ at 12% and Disney+ at 7.37%. Germany sees Netflix holding 27.81%, more than doubling Disney+’s 10.34%, while in Spain it controls 26.2% against Antena 3/Atresplayer’s 13.4%. Italy reflects a similar pattern with Netflix at 33.8%, ahead of Disney+ at 14.03%. The UK also follows the trend, where Netflix’s 24.37% comfortably outpaces Sky Go’s 14.23%.

Content-wise, "Squid Game 3" emerged as the series with the greatest global social impact, dominating conversations well beyond its home market. Regionally, national productions have also made their mark: in France, "Panda" leads the social impact charts, followed by "Carpe Diem" and "Mademoiselle Holmes"; in Germany, "Crystal Wall" takes the top spot, trailed by "Doppelhaushälfte" and "Die Augenzeugen"; in Italy, "Blackout – Vite Sospese" ranks first, with "The Bad Guy" and "Maria Corleone" next; in Spain, "Valle Salvaje" tops the list, followed by "Tasokare Hotel" and "El Jardinero"; and in the UK, "Adolescence" reigns supreme, ahead of "The Day of the Jackal" and "Doctor Who: Fifteenth Doctor".

GECA’s Prosperity Index, which predicts a show’s potential to become a franchise or secure renewal, aligns closely with these results, underscoring the correlation between high social engagement and long-term commercial viability. As the report notes, daily tracking of the Social Impact (SI) metric provides clear visibility on which productions maintain relevance and can drive audience loyalty months or even years after their debut.

With both global franchises and strong local productions fueling engagement, Netflix’s market dominance shows no sign of fading. As GECA’s data makes clear, the combination of high-impact originals and culturally resonant national content continues to be the winning formula in Europe’s highly competitive streaming arena.
