During this year’s Code Conference, Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO and Chief Content Officer of Netflix, shared data on the popularity of the company’s original titles, and revealed how many accounts viewed its top 10 series and movies within their first 28 days of release.

The first season of “Bridgerton” led its top series list with 82 million accounts having viewed the title, followed by part one of “Lupin” and “The Witcher,” with 76 million accounts having watched each. Meanwhile, “Extraction” led its top films list with 99 million accounts, followed by “Bird Box” (89 million) and “Spenser Confidential” (85 million).

At the same time, based on total viewed hours during their first 28 days on the service, “Bridgerton” also topped its series list with a whopping 625 million hours viewed. The fourth installment of “La Casa De Papel” took the second spot with 619 million, followed by the third season of “Stranger Things” with 582 million hours of viewing. “Bird Box” led its list for most popular films based on this metric with 282 million hours viewed, followed by “Extraction” (231 million hours viewed) and “The Irishman” (215 million viewing hours).

Speaking at the conference, Sarandos said that the company is “trying to be more transparent with the market, the talent and everybody,” and that the information revealed is part of its efforts to provide the industry with a greater view of what makes a Netflix hit. “It’s a big black box for everybody,”  he commented.

●  SEPTEMBER ORIGINAL TITLES LEAD THE WAY

The first half of Netflix’s 2021 has featured consistently record low digital original demand shares each quarter and subscriber losses in the United States and Canada, but a string of September releases has brought global audiences back to Netflix Originals in droves, according to Parrot Analytics.

A surprise trio of international Netflix Original series are allowing the streaming giant to close the third quarter of 2021 on a high note. This matters because audience demand for original programming is the key indicator of subscriber growth for SVOD platforms. Britain’s “Sex Education,” Spain’s “La Casa De Papel,” and South Korea’s shocking smash hit “Squid Game” - which Netflix claims is on track to be its most viewed series ever - are topping the charts as some of the most in-demand TV series in the world across all platforms in recent days.
