Today's viewer is not only served with an abundance of content but also a variety of ways to consume it: binged, weekly drops, or even the hybrid approach of a two-part release. In its latest report, Samba TV took a long-tail look at some of the biggest hits in 2022 to understand which release model worked best to build and retain viewership.

●  WEDNESDAY HAD THE TOP PREMIERE

With its bulk-release model, "Wednesday" generated the strongest buzz in its first 50 days. However, “House of the Dragon's” weekly episodes drove new interest each week of its season and ultimately had the highest total reach.

●  SHOWS WITH WEEKLY EPISODES GAINED MORE NEW VIEWERS OVER TIME

The ongoing buzz generated by new episodes releasing each week caused shows like “Tulsa King” and “Euphoria” to more than double their tune-in between premiere and total viewership. On the other hand, shows that were released in bulk tended to see relatively limited lifts between premiere and total viewership.

●  BULK-RELEASE SHOWS WERE MORE LIKELY TO RETAIN VIEWERS THROUGHOUT THE SEASON

Though new viewership dropped off quicker for bulk-release shows than those with weekly drops, bulk-release shows were more likely to retain their initial fans. For example, “Reacher” drove a 58% retention rate between premiere and finale, while “Moon Knight” retained only 33% of its viewers.
