Netflix enters content development partnership with Hirokazu Kore-eda

The collaboration derived from the global streamer's effort to expand its Japanese local feature film catalog. Koreeda will serve as director, Chief direction and showrunner for a film and a series produced by the outlet.

Netflix announced working with Japanese filmmaker, Hirokazu Koreeda to develop two projects - a film and a series, in an effort to to expand its live-action lineup from Japan.  "Netflix and I are teaming up to create a drama series and a big-budget movie that is different from my previous works," Koreeda said. "You still need to wait for a bit before they’re finished and delivered to you. I incorporate different elements from those in theater movies and try to create exciting works. Please look forward to them."

In addition to serving as Director, the executive will also contribute as showrunner and Chief direction. He will work alonggside young dirrectors to further secure the quality, and his overall appeal for the title. "Probably, the scale of the new movie will be different from the movies I’ve made before. Also, the drama series would not be realized if I didn’t collaborate with Netflix," he continued.

Known for his work on "Shoplifters" in 2018, Koreeda hopes to expand his global directing presence. He expressed the importance of streaming platforms and their role in the growth of titles like the ones he works on.

The global streamer hopes to continue expanding its local feature film slate by partnering with Japanese talent. "We hope to play a role in the history of great local talent finding their voices and delivering them to audiences everywhere, from Japan to the world," the streamer's press release read.
