RTVE's "La ley del mar" stands out among PRIX Italia 2024 winners

The migrant crisis reinterpreted in the Spanish TV series Rtve's "La ley del mar" (The Law of the Sea), won the Special Prize in Honor of the President of the Italian Republic at the 76th Prix Italia, the international event organized by Rai, which awards the best in Radio & Podcast, TV, and Digital. Rai also emerged victorious with "Pericolosamente vicini. Vivere con gli orsi" (“Dangerously Close. Living with Bears”), co-produced by Rai Documentari, which won in the "TV Documentary" section: a story reflecting on the delicate relationship between humans and nature.

Equally relevant is the series "Sambre" by France Télévisions, which addresses the issue of violence against women and won in the "TV Fiction" category. In the "TV Performing Arts" section, BBC triumphed with "Peaky Blinders: Rambert’s the Redemption of Thomas Shelby", a theatrical adaptation of a post-war Birmingham story, narrated through dance.

In the Radio & Podcast category, the BBC once again topped the "Documentary and Reportage" section with "To Catch a Scorpion", where a BBC journalist and a former soldier succeed where authorities have failed: infiltrating the human trafficking network of Scorpion, finding and confronting him. In the same category, the story of the Bosnian war, told through the experiences of a family, is portrayed in "Blasse Stunden / Blijedi sati" ("Faded Hours") by Austria's ORF, which won the "Drama" section, while Germany's ARD took the "Music" section with "Exzess. Eine TechnoOper", which revives the true story of the death of a guest at a Berlin techno club.

The Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Spain also led the "Digital" category: "DIT is jouw verhaal" ("DIT is Your Story"), an innovative platform from the Dutch broadcaster NPO that makes journalism accessible to citizens on various topics, won the "Factual" section. The Czech broadcaster CT won with "No Big Deal", a dramatic series that, with a comedic touch, explores the lives of young adults influenced by platforms like OnlyFans, winning the "Fiction" section. Finally, Spain's RTVE was the favorite in the "Interactive" category with "Lab Orquesta – Música artificial para humanos" ("Lab Orchestra – Artificial Music for Humans"), which tells the story of creating a musical composition using artificial intelligence.

As tradition dictates, two special prizes were awarded by the Prix Italia: the "Prix Italia - IFAD – Copeam Special Prize" went to "Gaspillage alimentaire, n’en jetez plus!" (Food Waste: A Recipe for Recycling) by France Télévisions, addressing the pressing issue of food waste, while the Signis Special Prize was awarded to Ard of Germany for "Sieben Winter in Teheran" (Seven Winters in Tehran), a documentary on injustice and violence against women in Iran.
