Limonero Films is launching "After the Rain: Putin’s Stolen Children Come Home", at Sunny Side of the Doc. The title tells the story of Ukrainian children, who were once illegally deported to Russia, finding healing through animal therapy. The joy Sasha and Veronika discover in the forest makes it easy to forget their stories are the reason the International Criminal Court recently issued an arrest warrant for Putin.

Sasha and Veronika are two of 1300 illegally deported Ukrainian children lucky enough to have been rescued by their parents and grandparents. Tragically, nearly twenty thousand children remain stuck in Russia despite President Zelensky’s call for their urgent return to form part of ongoing peace talks.

Told with sensitivity, humour and poetic visual grace, this 1 x 80’ & 52’ film shines a light on one of the war’s most harrowing consequences: the abduction of children. This film is a testament to the resilience of children, the possibility of recovery and the strength found in nature and compassion.

The film is an Ashford Studios & Dogstar Films Production in association with 2Brave Productions and The Electric Shadow Company and directed by Sarah McCarthy.

“We’re delighted to partner with Limonero Films to bring ‘After the Rain: Putin’s Stolen Children Come Home’ into the next phase of its life cycle, after nine months on the road screening the film at festivals and in cinemas in forty cities on six continents, it feels like the right moment to bring Limonero’s passion for powerful and provocative films to bear on lifting up the stories of Sasha and Veronica as a way to advocate for the children still stuck in Russian institutions,” said Sarah McCarthy.

"After the Rain" had its World Premiere at DOC NYC, was the closing night film of the Sofia International Film Festival and has it’s Australian premiere upcoming at the Melbourne International Film Festival and has already screened in exclusive preview events across forty cities on six continents. The filmmakers ran a crowd funding campaign to enable the families in the film to attend key screenings. This global tour underscores the film’s urgency and relevance as the world continues to grapple with the human cost of the war in Ukraine.
