UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, and Vice-President Editorial of Grupo Globo, João Roberto Marinho, have signed a new six-year technical cooperation and partnership agreement for ‘Criança Esperança’ (Hope for Children) today in Paris. The ceremony took place at the Organization’s Headquarters and is part of the activities that mark the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference, which opened on the 12th.

"The Criança Esperança Programme", a Globo TV initiative, has enjoyed significant success through its partnership with UNESCO since 2004. With the renewal of the cooperation agreement, UNESCO Representation in Brazil will continue to be responsible for the selection and monitoring of the grassroots projects and institutions to benefit from the resources, besides managing the funds raised during the campaigns.

“We have been historically committed to social issues and UNESCO offers us the ideal integrity for a strong social impact partnership, one that every year renews our enthusiasm to be also known as a purpose-driven brand,” said João Roberto Marinho, Chairman of the Editorial Board and Vice-President of Grupo Globo.

Recognized by UNESCO as an international model, the Criança Esperança Programme has a fundamental role to play in the discussion of important issues on Brazil’s social agenda, encouraging debate on public policies. The campaign also contributed to the inclusion of Article 227 in the 1988 Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil, which guarantees the rights of Brazilian children. Two years later, this article led to the ratification of the Brazilian Child and Adolescents Statute.

All projects benefited by Criança Esperança, which promote the personal development of individuals and organizations, are committed to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“UNESCO is very proud to be a partner of TV Globo through Criança Esperança, which we hope will continue to produce excellent results, contributing to reduce inequalities, promote social inclusion and leave no one behind”, said Audrey Azoulay. “We thank Globo for helping UNESCO to advocate its principles and values, such as quality of education, gender equality and social inclusion”, she added.

“We are happy to renew our partnership with Globo TV, and together continuing to promote education, and social inclusion, as well as the empowerment of children, adolescents and young people. In addition to bringing development opportunities to all regions of Brazil, Criança Esperança promotes a chain of solidarity that contributes to creating opportunities and transforming lives, building a fairer and more inclusive society for all, enabling us to work towards our goal of not leaving anyone behind,” highlighted the Director and Representative of UNESCO in Brazil Marlova Jovchelovitch Noleto.

The partnership between UNESCO and Globo in the campaign contributes towards promoting human development and social change for children, adolescents and young adults. In 2019, the Criança Esperança Programme set an all-time record, raising R$22.7 million in its campaign. The donations received will benefit 91 social projects in the areas of education, culture, sports, inclusion and citizenship, in 23 Brazilian states, directly impacting the lives of 66,000 children, adolescents and young people in situations of vulnerability.
