BBC iPlayer has seen its best year ever, breaking 7 billion streams for the first time ever. The World Cup was key to this success, as it was streamed 92 million times on iPlayer, while also reaching 38.8 million on BBC TV.
Reality show “Love Island” and ITV’s World Cup coverage were the most watched events in broadcaster streaming in 2022, with 273 million and 146 million streams, respectively, ITV announced.
This year’s World Cup matches, especially those involving the United States team, attracted massive TV audiences in the country, according to Nielsen’s latest report.
The World Cup final, in which Argentina prevailed against France to win the trophy, brought in a peak TV audience of 14.9 million on BBC One, with a TV audience share of 58%.
In 2026, the World Cup will be spread over three countries, United States, Canada and Mexico, giving brands and advertisers a chance to expand their reach and build connections with football fan bases, Nielsen noted.
