Amid its restructuring efforts, Discovery has named Jeeyoung Lee SVP of Content Strategy in the Asian region, and General Manager of operation in Japan and South Korea. “Jeeyoung brings an impressive track record to Discovery, with 20+ years’ broad knowledge and experience from across the Asia Pacific industry,” the company’s Chief Transformation Officer and President of Asia Pacific, Simon Robinson, said.
Lee, based in Seoul, will begin her tasks on the 17th of this month. She is set to report to Robinson. The executive will contribute to the development of the company’s operations in the region across all platforms. She will work alongside the Head of Content for the Asia Pacific, Lynn Ng, and other local creatives interested in developing original content.
Lee will also work closely with General Manager, David Macdonald to oversee Discovery in Japan and strengthen the South Korean division with a $43 million content investment from the Studio Discovery Production studio. She will execute the country’s growth of content in partnership with Korea Telecom Group’s skyTV, and the launch of Discovery Korea Networks.
The content expert garnered years of experience at New Regency Productions prior to her arrival at Discovery, where she led Asia Pacific regional content sales and has also served in regional senior executive roles at Fox Network Group, Endemol Shine Group, Viacom International, and CJ Entertainment & Media. “As we accelerate our original content production and look to expand our business in Japan and South Korea, her expertise and leadership, coupled with an in-depth understanding of both digital and traditional strategy, will be central in driving further growth across the region overall,” Robinson said.
In addition to Lee’s recruitment, Tony Qiu will continue in his role as SVP and general manager of Greater China and Southeast Asia, as well as leading the direct-to-consumer expansion in the APAC region. Meanwhile, Lynn Ng will continue as VP and head of content, Asia Pacific, and additionally oversee all insights and analytics functions for the region. “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to contribute and, in particular, to work within this dynamic environment with the diverse resources from Discovery,” added Lee.
