"El Hotel"
Producer and distributor Banijay has had a hectic start to the week at Mipcom Cannes, with two big announcements: it has acquired the global rights to Argentinian reality competition series “The Hotel,” and has pre-sold new eight-part historical drama “Marie Antoinette” to PBS Distribution in the United States.
Produced by Diego Guebel’s Boxfish for Canal 13 in Argentina and known locally as “El Hotel,” innovative competition reality series “The Hotel” sees 16 celebrity contestants isolate themselves for four months in a luxury hotel in the outskirts of a city – but with one caveat: the luxury establishment does not employ any staff. At the start of each week, celebrities are drawn to face in each other to determine who will be the guests and who become the hotel staff. While guests enjoy a luxurious stay in the pool, spa, live shows and tuck into gourmet dinners, staff are housed in the hotel’s service area; washing linen, preparing breakfast and serving the guests’ every need. At the end of the week, an elimination duel will decide who leaves The Hotel before the final winner takes home a huge cash prize.
“‘The Hotel’ is a colourful reality show featuring challenges with real jeopardy for celebrity contestants, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats. This series demonstrates the incredible breadth of Banijay’s multi-genre catalogue of more than 135.000 hours,” commented Lucas Green, Global Head of Content Operations at Banijay.
Diego Guebel, President of Boxfish, added: “‘The Hotel’ continues the successful collaboration between Banijay and Boxfish, which has produced three seasons of ‘MasterChef Celebrity’ in Argentina. We are once again thrilled to be working with such a renowned group and we strongly believe ‘The Hotel’ is a refreshing asset to its catalogue, with great global potential for buyers in Cannes.”
● “MARIE ANTIONETTE” TRAVELS TO THE UNITED STATES
At the same time, Banijay Rights, the global distribution arm of Banijay, announced the pre-sale of new eight-part historical drama “Marie Antoinette” to PBS Distribution in the United States, as Mipcom Cannes 2022 gets under way. The series will have its North American premiere in Spring 2023. Produced by Banijay Studios France, CAPA Drama and Les Gens, the acquisition marks the latest international deal for this Canal+ Creation Originale and follows recent Banijay Rights pre-sales to UK public broadcaster BBC2 and BBC First in Australia.
“As Mipcom gets started this week, I’m excited to announce PBS’ acquisition of ‘Marie Antoinette,’ a visually stunning drama from the exceptional Deborah Davis that continues to generate a buzz worldwide. This epic series is one of the most complete accounts of the young queen to date and we’re pleased that audiences in the United States will get to enjoy it soon,” said Matt Creasey, EVP Sales, Acquisitions and Co-productions at Banijay Rights.
Germaine Sweet, Managing Director Content Acquisitions at PBS Distribution, added: “We are thrilled to bring the story of Marie Antionette to audiences in the United States. This richly drawn period drama about the extraordinary young queen is sure to enthrall PBS fans from the opening scene until the credits roll.”
