Fifth Season, the global film and television studio, has announced a wide slate of international sales for the three-part docuseries “Death Cap: The Mushroom Murders,” co‑produced with Dreamchaser and Den of Martians. Originally commissioned by Stan in Australia, the series is directed by Emmy‑nominated filmmaker Gil Marsden (“United States of Scandal with Jake Tapper”) and examines the high‑profile case of Erin Patterson, an Australian woman convicted of fatally poisoning three relatives with a meal laced with death cap mushrooms.
Jennifer Ebell, EVP Television Distribution at Fifth Season, said: “Death Cap: The Mushroom Murders cuts straight to the heart of a case that’s captivated Australia and far beyond. With rare access and clear‑eyed storytelling, Gil brings fresh insight to a small‑town tragedy that spiralled into a global media storm. The response at home has been extraordinary, and we’re excited to share this story with audiences around the world.”
Fifth Season has secured deals with Netflix (UK), CNN (US & Canada), Bell Media (French Canada), SVT (Sweden), DR (Denmark), NRK (Norway), and MTV Oy (Finland). Stan will air the final two episodes of the series later this year.
The docuseries begins with an ordinary family lunch that turns into an international media sensation when four guests fall critically ill and three die. Global press converge on the town of Korumburra as theories and speculation escalate. The narrative intensifies when Erin Patterson, host of the lunch, is arrested and charged with triple homicide, with investigators concluding that the deaths were caused by the world’s most lethal mushroom, the death cap, traces of which were found in the meal she prepared.
“Death Cap: The Mushroom Murders” offers exclusive access to one of the most closely watched criminal cases in recent memory, exploring how a single tragic meal challenged assumptions about small‑town safety in Australia while raising larger questions about the fairness of a trial conducted under heavy global scrutiny.
Fifth Season’s broader unscripted portfolio includes the feature documentary on the iconic band Earth, Wind & Fire, directed by Academy Award‑winning filmmaker and musicologist Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and set to air on HBO in the US; “Planes That Changed History,” a 10‑part documentary series from Atomic Television for National Geographic, spotlighting the engineering breakthroughs behind aviation’s most influential aircraft; and “Bad Host: Hunting the Couchsurfing Predator,” produced by Academy Award‑winning Lightbox and based on the hit podcast “Verified.”
