FilmRise to distribute "Marvelous and the Black Hole" in North America

The film starring Rhea Perlman was part of 2021 Sundance Film Festival Official Selection, and it will be distributed in the U.S. and Canada.

FilmRise has acquired the exclusive theatrical, digital and broadcast distribution rights to the 2021 Sundance Film Festival Official Selection “Marvelous and the Black Hole,” to the U.S. and Canada. The filmis starring four-time Emmy Award-winner Rhea Perlman (“Cheers,” “Matilda,”) and Miya Cech (“Always Be My Maybe,” “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”), it was produced by Carolyn Mao and is Kate Tsang’s feature film directorial debut.

The film follows the story of an unlikely bond between a young girl and an eccentric magician. A teenage delinquent (Miya Cech) befriends a surly magician (Perlman) who helps her navigate her inner demons and dysfunctional family with sleight of hand magic. Written and directed by Kate Tsang, “Marvelous and the Black Hole” is a unique coming of age comedy that touches on unlikely friendships, grief, and finding hope in the darkest moments.

The film had its worldwide premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, its New York premiere at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival and received the Grand Jury Award from the 2021 IFF Boston Film Festival. The film continues its robust festival run which has so far included the 2021 Mill Valley Film Festival; 2021 Atlanta Film Festival; 2021 Sun Valley Film Festival where the film won the One in a Million Narrative award; 2021 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival where it was nominated for the Emerging Filmmaker Award and; was nominated for the Audience Award at the 2021 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.
